The Luxury of Latex Mattresses

If you’ve never experienced the sheer luxury of sleeping on a latex bed, you’re in for a real treat when you visit Forty Winks.

Our exclusive range of latex beds (in king size and queen size) have been specially selected from the pick of Australia’s leading bedding brands ~ giving you every opportunity to ‘test out the best’ and find ‘the one’ that you instinctively know has the comfort and chiropractic support that feels right for your body.

It’s very much a matter of personal preference. But rest assured, whichever latex bed you choose will allow you to enjoy all of their inherent qualities and orthopaedic benefits.

What are the features and benefits of latex beds?

  1. The natural elastic properties of latex beds relieve pressure on key points of your body. You’ll feel the support under your lower back and thighs, while your shoulders and hips will gently mould into the mattress. The result is that you’ll sleep with naturally correct spinal alignment ~ and wake up feeling revived and rejuvenated.

  2. Minimal partner disturbance - By providing independent support for each sleeper and absorbing the impact of your significant other getting into or out of bed (and tossing and turning), Latex mattresses effectively minimise partner disturbance.

  3. Hyper-allergenic - Latex beds are hyper-allergenic as they naturally inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi and are resistant to dust mites ~ so your sleep will be as healthy as it is comfortable.

  4. All of the premium quality latex mattresses at Forty Winks are designed to breathe and promote excellent ventilation ~ ensuring your bed always feels fresh.

  5. Latex mattresses never need flipping. Enquire also about our quality range of chiropractic latex pillows that are specially designed to help relieve pressure on neck muscles during sleep.

What actually is Natural Latex?

100% Pure Natural Latex is made from the white milky sap juice which is tapped from the bark of the ‘Hevea Brasiliensis’ or Rubber Tree ~ and is one of the most environmentally beneficial products known to man. Using the Traditional 100% Natural Dunlop Process, this indigenous milky juice is made into soft, honeycombed, foam-like material ~ and its unique properties and micro- cellular structure give it a level of mattress durability and bedding comfort that is second to none.

More Hygienic and Healthy

Naturally Anti-Bacterial and Anti Dust mite

Premium Natural Latex has better anti-bacterial properties than any other bedding material. The excellent breathing properties of Natural Latex prevents moisture build-up ~ which is the major cause of bacterial growth and dust mite infestation.

Naturally Hypoallergenic

As well as being best for everybody’s health and well being, natural latex mattresses are especially recommended for people who have chemical sensitivities or suffer from allergies, respiratory problems, eczema, hay fever and asthma. At the final stage of production, premium quality natural latex goes through a double-washing process that makes it as contaminant- free as it’s possible to get.

Breathes Better Cooler Comfort

Premium Quality Natural latex breathes better. It is the innate breathing quality of Natural Materials which give them their unique ability to respond to your individual body temperature. Natural Latex has its own unique breathing open cell structure, which is unmatched by any other bedding material.

Greater Durability and Resilience

Landesgewerbeanstalt (or LGA) is a specialist institute that independently tests the resilience and durability of latex. The longest test is 60,000 cycles which simulates normal use over 10 years. The results are indicated with a score out of 100 points and premium grade latex scores in the mid to high 90’s ~ which is reflected in the excellent, long-life guarantees these latex mattresses come with not to sag, compress or lose their firmness or their resilience.

Some useful tips in selecting a Latex Mattress

This guide will hopefully help you to make an educated buying decision on a latex mattress.

  1. Latex is very dense and a quality mattress core of latex is the most durable mattress on the market today. Latex mattress cores tend to be 6" thick are always made with pincore holes in them to soften the latex, it also allows the mattress to breathe for a more comfortable nights sleep.

The larger the holes, the softer the latex core will feel. Most latex mattresses just have one size of holes through the whole mattress so the mattress has a uniform feel throughout. Some cores, though, are made with different sections of latex with different sized holes. This allows the bed to have different zones - softer under the shoulders and feet and firmer under the hips.

Finally, many latex beds layer other materials (whether softer latex or memory foam, etc) on top of the latex core to give the bed a softer or more yielding feel. Latex mattresses have a nice bouncy feel and they are very supportive.

  2. Today, most latex mattresses tend to be either made of natural latex, synthetic latex or a combination of both. Talalay latex products will generally be the most expensive, but combination mattresses do also offer very good resilience and wear.

  3. In addition to having two different kinds of latex to choose from (natural or synthetic), the cores of latex mattresses can be manufactured in two different ways ~ the original Dunlop method or the more recently developed Talalay method.

Which is ‘the best’ depends on who you talk to. Manufacturers who use the Talalay method, describe their product as being less dense, having more air dispersed in the product due to the flash freeze step used in the process, and claim it has a more uniform cell structure. Those who use the more straightforward vulcanization technique in the Dunlop method like the more elastic, springier feeling it creates, and have strong opinions about using all natural materials.

The truth is they are both very good products ~ and it really boils down to your personal preference of what feels right when you go to try them out.
