Are you finishing the year off with a yawn? It's time to shine a light on your sleep habits in 2019. Like millions of Australians, you're probably waking up tired and craving more energy throughout the day. Quality sleep starts with good sleep habits, this New Year commit to investing in your sleep health with these practical tips:

  1. Create a relaxing bedtime routine. According to the Sleep Health Foundation, going to bed at the same time every night is an important part of maintaining your body's internal clock and a regular sleep pattern. Before going to bed, begin to unwind by engaging in relaxing activities such as reading a book or having a warm bath. Turn off all screens—yes, even your smartphone—1-2 hours before bed. If your smartphone also doubles as an alarm clock, consider using an analogue alarm clock instead. Your bedtime routine is a great way to get some 'you time' and disconnect from the rest of the world.

  2. Avoid drinking caffeine and sugary beverages at least 2 hours before bed—this incudes cigarettes and alcohol. While alcohol helps you fall asleep, it will make it harder for you to stay asleep and aggravates sleep problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea.

  1. Add exercise to your daytime routine. Morning and before dinnertime is the ideal time to workout. Research has shown that adding moderate exercise to your routine can help you fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and sleep roughly 45 minutes longer.

  1. If you find it hard to 'switch off' your mind at night, try relaxation and visualisation techniques that help you focus on your breathing. You can calm your thoughts by visualising a peaceful scene such as your favourite nature spot.

  1. Invest in the surface you sleep on. Your mattress, pillow and blankets should be comfortable and supportive, and most importantly, right for you.
