Get creative with style and storage solutions perfect for compact spaces.

As more of us embrace apartment living and compact lifestyles, finding clever ways to maximise space has become essential. Small bedrooms, in particular, present a unique challenge: how do we make them stylish yet functional? Cosy, without being cluttered?

The key is to find creative solutions that balance aesthetics with practicality. It might feel like an impossible task, but at the end of the day, all you need is the right furniture and bedroom storage. And maybe a measuring tape, too.

At Forty Winks, we believe good sleep is essential for everyone, and a neat, spacious bedroom that sets your mind at ease is a good place to start. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of practical styling tips and design ideas to make even the smallest bedrooms feel grand.

Choose the right bed size

You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes that are too big, would you? Well, the same rules apply to your bed.

Just because your bedroom can technically accommodate a queen-size bed, doesn’t mean it should. The floor space you lose can make your room feel cramped, and that’s before you’ve even added bedside tables or a chest of drawers. Measuring up and knowing the proportions of your bedroom will help you make informed decisions about which furniture will be a good fit.

Opting for a smaller bed size will enhance the proportions of your bedroom and offer more space for you to incorporate other necessary furniture. Our handy bed size chart makes it easier than ever to find the right one for you.

Create the illusion of space

In small bedrooms, mirrors are your not-so-secret best friend. Not only are they great for outfit checks before you leave the house, they also reflect light around the room and create a sense of space. For compact bedrooms, a freestanding mirror works best. The Forty Winks Lincoln Lean Mirror is a great choice – with its soft curved edges and sleek design, it’s a luxurious statement piece that simply leans against the wall and takes up very minimal space.

Utilising the vertical proportions of the room is another way to make it feel bigger than it really is. From blank walls to high ceilings, your bedroom doesn’t have to be defined by its floor space. Try adding floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains, for example, which give the illusion of more height and invite beautiful, dappled light into a room.

Another trick is to include a large, light-coloured rug. This might sound counterintuitive in a small bedroom, but positioning a big rug underneath your bed can make the space feel wider. As a general rule of thumb, you should leave between two and five inches of bare floor between your rug and the walls to create a cohesive, elegant look.

Storage tips for small bedrooms

We all have stuff, and that stuff needs somewhere to go. Of course, too much furniture will quickly make a small bedroom feel cramped. The solution? Opt for furniture that doubles as storage. Take the Forty Winks Bellevue Bed Frame with Gas Lift Storage, for instance. This bed not only boasts a modern design, it also features an innovative gas lift base that reveals a hidden storage compartment, offering both style and practicality. Plus, with shelves and an LED built into the bedhead, it’s ideal for bedrooms where space is lacking.

Other beds with storage options include the Forty Winks Sovereign Bed Frame W/Gas Lift Storage & End Drawer Base, the Forty Winks Arc Bookend Bed Frame W/Gas Lift Storage and the Forty Winks Bella Bed Frame W/Gas Lift Storage. Two-drawer bedside tables are also a great option for stowing away clutter. The Forty Winks Addison Bedside Table and Tallboy are excellent for apartment living with their sleek, narrow silhouettes and small footprints.

Finally, make use of those blank walls by installing floating shelves. They won’t take up precious floor space, and you can use them to store books, indoor plants, scented candles and any other knick-knacks you’re struggling to find a place for. Plus, your bedroom will feel like it’s been plucked straight out of the pages of a glossy interior design magazine!
