King bed frames
Timber, upholstered, storage and bedhead styles in king size, giving a main bedroom the extra breathing room and a wider choice of finishes to work with.
About king bed frames
A king bed frame gives your main bedroom real breathing room, generous enough for two to spread out or for a lazy Sunday morning as a family. Choose from timber, wooden or upholstered styles, with or without a headboard, and add underbed storage or a gas lift base if your bedroom needs to work a little harder.
King bed frame dimensions
A standard king bed frame measures 183cm wide x 203cm long, making it the most generous standard bed size in Australia. That's 30cm wider than a queen, which sounds modest until you're actually sleeping in it. You'll want a bedroom with at least 12–14m² of floor space so the frame has room to breathe and you're not doing an awkward sideways shuffle to reach your side.
How to choose the right king bed frame
A king bed frame is a long-term addition to your home, so it's worth a little thought before you buy. Here's what matters most:
Style and material
Material sets the mood for the whole room, which is why it's usually the best place to start. A timber king bed frame brings warmth and natural character that works across everything from coastal to contemporary Australian bedrooms. Wooden frames, at a more accessible price point, give you that same warm aesthetic without stretching the budget further than it needs to go. If you want something softer and more finished, an upholstered king bed frame adds texture and that hotel-room finish that's genuinely hard to walk away from once you've seen it in person. There's no wrong answer here. It really comes down to your existing furniture and how you want the room to feel when you walk in.
Storage options
If your bedroom is tight on space, a king bed frame with storage might just be the most practical decision you make all year. Built-in drawers give you easy, everyday access to extra linen, pillows, and anything else taking up wardrobe space. A gas lift base goes one further, with the entire mattress lifting to reveal a generous compartment underneath. A king bed frame with drawers sounds like a small detail until you actually have one, and then you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
Headboards
A king bed frame headboard finishes the whole thing off properly. Some frames include one as part of the design, others are sold separately so you can mix and match to suit your style. Upholstered headboards add a plush, layered look. Timber headboards keep things natural and grounded. Not sure which direction to take? Our in-store team loves exactly this kind of question.

There's only so much you can judge from a photo. Seeing the finish in person, checking the drawer action, and getting a feel for the actual proportions of a frame makes a real difference. As a proudly Australian, family-owned retailer with stores right across the country, we're here to help you get it right, not just make a sale.
And if you're also in the market for a new king size mattress, make a proper day of it and book a Forty Winks bedMATCH® session while you're in store. Available exclusively at every Forty Winks store nationwide, Forty Winks bedMATCH® is a sleep diagnostic system, personalised and backed by sleep science, that takes 18 precise body measurements and runs over 1,000 calculations to match you to your ideal level of support. The right frame and the right mattress, sorted in one visit.
At Forty Winks, king bed frame costs start from around $799 for entry-level options and go up to $2,500 and beyond for premium timber or upholstered frames with built-in storage. Think of it as a long-term investment you'll use every single night. Afterpay is available if you'd rather spread the cost, and it's always worth keeping an eye on our king bed frame sale pricing on selected lines throughout the year.
Yes. A higher price tag doesn't automatically mean a better-looking frame. At Forty Winks, there are well-designed, solid options at more accessible price points that don't ask you to compromise on style. If budget is front of mind, let our team know and they'll point you straight to the best value options available in-store or online.
Some do and some don't. Many of our king bed frames include a headboard as part of the design, while others are sold as a base only so you have the flexibility to choose your own. It's always worth checking the product listing or asking in-store if you want to mix and match separately.
Bed height is more personal than most people expect. A low-profile or platform bed frame gives a room an open, airy feel and suits modern or minimal spaces well. A taller king size bed base, or a frame with more clearance underneath, makes getting in and out easier, which matters more than it sounds on a 6am alarm. If under-bed storage is on the wish list, a taller frame gives you more room to work with too. Our team can walk you through the options in-store if you're still weighing it up.
A few simple tricks can keep your frame whisper-quiet:
- Make sure bolts and screws are tightened regularly.
- Use rubber washers or felt pads where metal or timber parts connect.
- Ensure the frame sits on a flat, even surface to prevent stress on joints.
Regular maintenance keeps your bed frame sturdy and your sleep undisturbed.
