Double mattresses

A double mattress is a practical middle ground, wider than a king single without taking over a smaller bedroom. It's a smart pick for teenagers, guest rooms, and solo sleepers who want quality sleep without the queen-size footprint or price tag.

Who is a double mattress best for?

The right double mattress can make a genuine difference to how rested and ready you feel every morning, whatever your setup looks like.

Teenagers and young adults

A double is a brilliant upgrade from a single for teenagers, giving growing bodies the space and support they need without taking over the room. It's a size that works through the uni years and beyond, making it a practical, long-term investment in better sleep and better days. Growing bodies need proper support more than most. An APA-endorsed design like the Crown Posture Bedding Physio Pro Advance or a King Koil Chiro range are worth looking at for their supportive designs at affordable double mattress pricing, and a Forty Winks bedMATCH^® consultation factors in height, weight and sleep style for a more precise recommendation as their needs keep changing.

Guest bedrooms

A good guest room doesn't need a king. A quality double mattress gives your guests a sleep so good they might just start hinting about extending their stay. Pair it with a solid base and quality bedding and you've done right by them.

Solo sleepers in smaller spaces

If a queen won't comfortably fit, a double size mattress is the next best thing. You get the extra width over a king single without sacrificing floor space, making it a popular and practical choice for apartments and smaller bedrooms where great sleep still matters just as much.

Budget-conscious buyers

Because double mattresses use less material than queen or king sizes, they're typically 10 to 20 per cent less expensive for the equivalent model, with costs at Forty Winks ranging from around $349 for entry-level through to $6,000+ for luxury options. For buyers comparing double vs queen mattress options on a tighter budget, that difference adds up without any compromise on the quality of your sleep. Finance options are also available if you'd rather spread the cost.

Weighing up double versus queen? A queen measures 153cm x 203cm, 15cm wider and 15cm longer than a double's 138cm x 188cm. For couples or taller sleepers, that extra room makes a real difference, but for solo sleepers, teenagers, guest rooms, or bedrooms where every centimetre counts, a double does the job brilliantly without taking over the space.

Double mattress firmness guide: Finding your right feel

Choosing the right firmness is just as important as choosing the right size. Get it right and you will feel the difference every single morning. Here's how each level works across our double size mattress range:

Ultra plush mattress

The softest feel in the range, with deep cushioning comfort layers that cradle the body and melt away pressure points. Best suited to side sleepers and lighter body types who want maximum pressure relief and that cloud-like feeling from the moment they lie down.

Plush mattress

Plush all the support, with a little extra luxury. A double mattress plush option works beautifully for side sleepers who want contouring comfort without the sensation of sinking too deeply, so you wake up cradled rather than swallowed up.

Medium mattress

The most versatile option across the range and a brilliant starting point if you are not sure where your preference sits. A medium double mattress suits combination sleepers and those working through the options for the first time, offering balanced support and comfort across all sleep positions.

Firm mattress

A double firm mattress keeps hips level and the spine in a neutral position throughout the night, making it a strong choice for back and stomach sleepers and teenagers who need consistent posture support while they slumber.

Ultra firm mattress

Popular with those who enjoy a traditional firm mattress experience, it creates a stable, predictable surface that stays consistent no matter how much you move during the night.

Double mattress design and materials

Knowing what's inside your mattress helps you buy with confidence and means you can care for it properly to get the most out of it for years to come.

Pocket spring mattresses: Individually wrapped coils that move independently, so you get personalised support without being disturbed every time the person next to you shifts position. Durable, breathable and a reliable all-rounder for most sleepers.

Memory foam double mattress: Responds to your body heat and pressure to mould closely around you, which means serious pressure relief and that deeply cradled feeling side sleepers love.

Hybrid mattresses: Combine pocket springs underneath with foam or latex on top. You get the responsive support of springs with the contouring comfort of foam. A brilliant choice for sleepers who want it all and refuse to settle.
