Bed frame styles to suit your room

A bed frame does more than hold up your mattress. It can shape the look of your whole bedroom, so think about the style, finish and features that work for your space. Browse our bed frames to see the full range.

  • Timber frames: bring natural texture and warmth to the room, with finishes that work across a range of bedroom styles.

  • Upholstered frames: a soft, tailored look with a fabric or leather-look finish, often paired with a matching bedhead.

  • Storage beds: built-in drawers or a lift-up base make the most of the space under your bed.

  • Gas lift beds: a hinged base that lifts on gas struts for easy access to storage underneath.

Storage beds and gas lift beds both free up space, but they suit slightly different needs. A storage bed with drawers gives you easy, everyday access to what's inside, while a gas lift base clears a larger single cavity that's better suited to bulkier items you don't need to reach as often. Short on wardrobe space? Both can give you extra room for spare linens, seasonal clothing and other things you don’t need every day.

Whichever style you choose, make sure the frame suits the size mattress you already have, or the one you're planning to buy.

Bases vs adjustable bases

A bed base sits under your mattress and provides the support structure, while an adjustable base lets you raise your head or feet at the touch of a button. Compare our bed bases and adjustable bases to see what suits you.

  • Fixed bases: a simple, sturdy platform for your mattress, with no moving parts.

  • Adjustable bases: let you change your position for reading, watching TV, or simply finding an angle that feels comfortable.

Adjustable bases are a popular choice if you like to sit up to read or watch TV in bed, or if you simply prefer a bit of an incline while you sleep. We stock adjustable bases from TEMPUR®, MLILY and iAdjust, each with its own range of features.

Matching a base to your mattress

Not every base suits every mattress, so it's worth checking compatibility before you buy. This is especially true for adjustable bases, because the mattress needs to be able to flex with the base rather than sit rigidly on top of it.

It also pays to make sure the base you choose is built to support the thickness and weight of the mattress you're pairing it with. If you’re considering an adjustable base, check the specific compatibility requirements. Not every mattress is designed to flex. If in doubt, chat with one of our Sleep Advisors before you choose.

If you're choosing both mattress and bed base together, start with our mattress buying guide to find the right feel first, then match a base to it.

Bed sizes made simple

Bed frames and bases are designed around standard mattress sizes, so knowing your mattress size is the best place to start. If you already own bedding or a mattress, matching the frame to that size avoids any awkward gaps or overhang.

Finishing touches: Bedheads and room fit

A bedhead can frame your bed, protect the wall behind it and give you somewhere comfortable to lean back. Some frames come with a matching bedhead included, while others let you choose one separately, so you can mix and match finishes to suit the rest of your bedroom furniture. Browse our bedheads.

Before you buy, measure your room. Leave enough space to walk around the bed comfortably, open any nearby wardrobe doors, and fit bedside tables if you need them. A tape measure and a bit of masking tape on the floor can save you a return trip.

It's also worth checking doorways and stairwells if the frame or bedhead needs to come apart to get into the room, and confirming ceiling height isn't an issue for a tall bedhead or a bed with built-in storage.

Whether you're after a simple frame, a base with built-in storage, or a fully adjustable set-up, visit your local Forty Winks and chat with one of our Sleep Advisors. We’ll help you find a bed frame or base that works with your mattress, your space, and the way you like to sleep.
